Nashville Predators veteran Ryan O’Reilly openly criticized his own performance following the team’s 3-1 defeat to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. Despite scoring Nashville’s only goal, O’Reilly expressed frustration with his play and its impact on the team’s results.
"I’m playing centre, turning the puck over everywhere, can’t make a six-foot pass to save my life. We’re not going to have much success if I’m playing pathetic like that. I’ve had one good year in my career. I don’t have an answer, that’s for sure."
The 34-year-old forward has a notable career with 309 goals, 834 points in 1,168 games, and a Stanley Cup win in 2019 with St. Louis. This season, he has scored six goals and contributed 10 points over 16 games. However, last season the Predators underperformed significantly, finishing near the bottom of the Western Conference despite offseason reinforcements.
O’Reilly acknowledged his own struggles in recent games and called on himself and the team's veterans to lead the turnaround.
"The last few games, I’ve been making mistakes left and right. You can’t expect to win like that. There’s frustration everywhere. Guys are working, a lot of guys are working. It falls on leadership and we have to be the ones to get over it."
The Predators also faced a controversial overtime loss against the Minnesota Wild, where the Wild scored after the net had come off its moorings, adding to Nashville’s difficult start this season.
Ryan O’Reilly’s candid self-criticism highlights his awareness of leadership duties as the Nashville Predators struggle early in the season, seeking a path back to competitiveness.
