Jennifer Lawrence has collaborated with Wolfgang Tillmans, Elizabeth Peyton, and Philippe Parreno to create intimate portraits for W Magazine. These new works form part of the magazine’s latest portrait series, highlighting Lawrence as the subject for three distinct artistic interpretations.
By Jennifer Lawrence’s own admission, she isn’t skilled at drawing, except for a simple side-profile horse head she can create with a childlike flair. This playful detail emerged during her interview for the Art Issue of W Magazine, an ongoing series since 2006 that pairs prominent figures with contemporary artists.
Previous issues have featured notable collaborations, such as Mickalene Thomas photographing Cardi B, Barbara Kruger overlaying text on a nude Kim Kardashian, and George Clooney blending into Yayoi Kusama’s polka dot world. For this edition, Lawrence was depicted by Elizabeth Peyton, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Philippe Parreno — each artist providing a unique cover and perspective on the 35-year-old actor.
“We wanted to work with artists who approached portraiture in different ways and who worked in different mediums. Of course, it was also important that we connected to them on a personal level,” said Sara Moonves, editor in chief at W Magazine.
Moonves explained that each artist engaged with the project in their own manner, but all did so with deep commitment and care, reflecting the diverse approaches to capturing Lawrence's essence.
Elizabeth Peyton contributed a distinct portrait, adding to the varied artistic interpretations surrounding Lawrence in this feature.
Wolfgang Tillmans and Philippe Parreno also presented their own unique takes, completing the trio of portraits that collectively celebrate Jennifer Lawrence's multifaceted persona.
Summary: Jennifer Lawrence inspired three renowned contemporary artists to create intimate and diverse portraits for W Magazine, showcasing a multifaceted artistic portrayal of the actor.
