Edie Falco on Future Roles and Complex Characters

Actress Edie Falco said she is eager to take on the role of a female superhero, describing it as an exciting new challenge. Known for her Emmy-winning performances in “The Sopranos” and “Nurse Jackie,” Falco expressed that she thrives when portraying layered and multifaceted characters.

“Never have I said I can’t do that,” she explained. “You sort of find a way you can go and see, because you’re able to know you have to stop before it is dangerous. And I’ve been in therapy for 7,000 years.”

Falco added that she actively seeks out complicated roles, as they make her craft more engaging and meaningful.

“I look for those complicated characters. That’s what makes this exciting. To play someone with a less complicated life is less interesting.”

On Playing Complex Women

At 62, Falco reflected on her long career and the evolution of female roles in the industry. She said she feels fortunate to have portrayed many complex women as opportunities for female actors have deepened over time.

“I’ve been very lucky that kind of since I started working, female characters are getting more interesting and complicated. I feel like I’m riding this wave of really interesting and complicated female characters.”

Avoiding Typecasting

Falco noted that avoiding early typecasting helped her navigate a continually diverse career.

“I imagine if you’re only ever playing young, beautiful, sexy women, it’s going to get harder as you get older.”

Looking Ahead

Looking toward the future, Falco said she is intrigued by the prospect of portraying a political figure, joking that it might allow her to get something out of her system.

“Maybe I can get something out of my system,” she quipped.
