Starting 2025 strong, British golfer Marco Penge has made a remarkable comeback. After returning from a gambling suspension, he rose from No. 461 in the Official World Golf Ranking to become a three-time DP World Tour champion and a top-30 player in the world. His form has also earned him a spot in the upcoming Masters Tournament in April.
During the second round of the Abu Dhabi Championship on Friday, Penge nearly capped his breakout year with a hole-in-one on the 13th hole. Instead, his tee shot struck the flagstick and bounced harshly off the green, resulting in an unfortunate break. Announcers noted he would need some luck to avoid the nearby hazard.
Penge’s ball remained playable, but he could not save par and took a bogey instead. Despite the setback, he carded a strong round of 68 and finished tied for 17th heading into the weekend.
Penge remains projected to hold second place in the season-long Race to Dubai standings, trailing playing partner Rory McIlroy by one stroke after 36 holes. The tournament is currently co-led by Tommy Fleetwood and Aaron Rai.
“Obviously a nice shot into the par 3, 13, hit the flag, made bogey,” Penge said afterward. “Overall, really pleased with how I played. Just need the putts to drop.”
Marco Penge’s 2025 season continues to impress despite a tough bounce in Abu Dhabi, reinforcing his comeback success and solid position among golf’s rising stars.
