When Sculpture Milwaukee’s Executive Director and Curator John Riepenhoff approached Japanese artist Izumi Kato about using a close-up of his sculpture Untitled (2024) as artwork for a new beer can label, the artist gladly agreed. The piece had been displayed near the Milwaukee Art Museum from June 2024 until the previous month.
The vivid image, viewed by more than three million people during the installation’s run, now decorates the recently launched Kato Candy IPA. The beer, created by Waunakee-based Untitled Art, serves as a fundraiser supporting Sculpture Milwaukee.
“I’m very happy that my work has been seen by so many people. My art doesn’t contain social commentary, and my creativity is deeply personal,” Kato said. “Still, I always hope that my work is open to anyone, including those outside the art world. I want each viewer to interpret it in their own way.”
Kato also expressed gratitude for participating in a project that connects his art with Milwaukee’s vibrant beer culture.
“I’m honored to be part of this project, promoting the beer culture of Milwaukee as a collaborator. I hope people all over the country will enjoy this delicious beer.”
The artist had only one special request: some of the Kato Candy IPA, inspired by Untitled Art’s popular Cotton Candy IPA, be sent to his Tokyo studio.
This collaboration blends visual art and craft beer as Izumi Kato’s sculpture-inspired design supports Sculpture Milwaukee through a creative fundraising initiative.
