Millions of Australians along the east coast are preparing for potentially severe storms and heavy rain this weekend after a turbulent start to the storm season.
Late thunderstorms and strong winds are expected in Sydney on both Friday and Saturday, following warm daytime temperatures.
The Bureau of Meteorology's forecaster Jonathon Howe reported a series of “unsettled days” due to an advancing cold front affecting much of southeastern Australia on Friday and Saturday.
“Today (Friday) we are looking at the possibility of thunderstorms all the way from southern Victoria across to South Australia and up into northern parts of NSW,”
Mr. Howe warned of damaging wind gusts for parts of northern Victoria and northwestern New South Wales on Friday afternoon. Thunderstorms are also likely in Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and Sydney.
“Severe thunderstorms are possible through the day for the northwestern slopes of NSW, into southern inland Queensland and a large swath across Central Australia,”
he said. These areas may experience damaging wind gusts accompanying thunderstorms into Saturday.
Heavy rain, damaging winds, and large hailstorms are possible from Wollongong to Sydney, Newcastle, the Hunter Region, Mid North Coast, and extending into interior parts of Queensland.
