First Picture of Death Row Grandmother Lindsay Sandiford Back on British Soil

Lindsay Sandiford, 69, who was convicted 13 years ago of smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine into Bali, has returned to the UK. She was photographed arriving at Heathrow's Terminal 4 on Friday.

Sandiford, a British grandmother, spent over a decade on death row in Indonesia. She was seen in a wheelchair, dressed in black leggings and a green cardigan, covering her face with her clothing upon arrival.

She left Indonesia early Friday after being spared execution following a deal between Jakarta and London to repatriate her and another British prisoner on humanitarian grounds. The British government reportedly spent £600 on her flight ticket.

Handover at Kerobokan Prison

Before her departure, Sandiford was photographed at a handover ceremony at Kerobokan Prison in Bali. She left the prison alongside fellow British inmate Shabab Shahabadi, 35, who was serving a life sentence for drug offenses.

The two were transported to Denpasar International Airport, where they were expected to be handed over to British Ambassador Dominic Jeremy before boarding their flight.

“Lindsay Sandiford and Shahab Shahabadi have serious health conditions and are being repatriated on humanitarian grounds,”

— Matthew Downing, UK's Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia

Both prisoners' repatriations highlight the humanitarian considerations in their cases after long periods of incarceration abroad.

Author's summary: Lindsay Sandiford, after 13 years on death row in Indonesia, has returned to the UK under a humanitarian deal due to serious health concerns.
