Manchester United prospect James Overy has earned a surprising call-up to the Australia senior national team for upcoming matches against Venezuela and Colombia. This rise follows his standout performances that caught the attention of Ruben Amorim and his breakthrough with Australia's Under-21 squad.
Overy, turning 18 this weekend, joined Manchester United's academy in summer 2024 through a scholarship before signing a professional contract in July. After recovering from an eight-month injury layoff, he debuted for the Under-18s in February. This season, he has been a consistent figure in Darren Fletcher’s squad and has also appeared for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 and the National League Cup.
In May, Ruben Amorim included Overy and several young players in first-team training sessions ahead of a Premier League game against Chelsea. Now, with injuries affecting several regular Socceroos players, coach Tony Popovic has expanded his squad, bringing Overy into the senior national setup.
"It's another opportunity to expand the depth and introduce players who have not yet been exposed to the Socceroos environment or senior international football," Popovic said.
The call-up marks a significant milestone in Overy’s career as he aims to establish himself at both club and international levels.
