RSL Victoria invites the community to buy a red poppy ahead of Remembrance Day. This year, Monday 11 November 2024, commemorates the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I in 1918.
At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Australians and millions around the world pause to remember those who served and sacrificed. Local services will be held in Ararat, Willaura, and Lake Bolac, all beginning at 11am.
“The poppy is known as the Flower of Remembrance.”
These bright red flowers were among the first to bloom across the former battlefields of northern France and Belgium after the Great War ended. In 1921, Australia adopted the red poppy as an emblem to honour the fallen and support living veterans.
Remembrance Day poppies and badges are currently on sale outside Ritchies IGA, Woolworths, and Bendigo Bank. They can also be purchased from local businesses including Fosters Mensland, Deb’s Diner, the Mess and Barracks, Mitre-10, Growmaster Grampians, the Leopold Hotel, and Quick Cuts.
Buying a red poppy honors those who served in war and helps sustain community remembrance through local support each November 11.
