Dan Trachtenberg, director of the Predator franchise, expressed his interest in reviving Kevin Costner's divisive 1995 sci-fi film Waterworld by creating a sequel in a different format. After successfully rebooting the Predator series, Trachtenberg revealed his plans for the next project ahead of the Predator: Badlands premiere.
Instead of making another movie, Trachtenberg envisions Waterworld as an open-world third-person action-adventure video game. He explained:
"The thing about Waterworld that I want to see is a video game. I want to see an open-world third-person action-adventure video game that is not a remake of the movie, but is a sequel to the movie. That's what I want to see."
This approach follows a growing trend where video games serve as official sequels to films, offering new narratives and experiences. A notable example is Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009), which acts as a sequel to the 1989 film Ghostbusters II. Set during Thanksgiving 1991, the game has players assume the role of a new recruit trained by the iconic Ghostbusters team investigating paranormal events in New York City.
Dan Trachtenberg proposes continuing Waterworld through an open-world video game sequel, prioritizing interactive storytelling over a traditional movie reboot.
