Chris d’Entremont, the Liberals’ newest caucus member, indicated other Conservatives might follow his lead in crossing over. The Nova Scotia MP made the announcement in Ottawa shortly after leaving the Conservative caucus to join the minority Liberals, just hours after their budget was tabled.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his support, saying,
“I’m honoured to welcome him as the newest member of our government caucus. Chris’s decision to join the government caucus at this crucial moment for our country is exceptionally valuable and important.”
This move comes as the Liberals are only two seats away from a majority, which would help secure the budget’s passage without opposition support.
Speaking to reporters, d’Entremont explained his long consideration of the change, citing misalignment with former Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s ideals:
“Over the last number of months, I wasn’t feeling that I was aligned with the ideals of what the leader of the opposition had been talking about. So, I’ve been sort of relooking at what my career is bringing, and what I can do for my constituency.”
He emphasized that his decision was based on his values and commitment to his constituents rather than party loyalty.
Chris d’Entremont’s recent party switch highlights potential shifts within Conservative ranks and strengthens the Liberals’ path to a stable majority government.
