MLB Free Agency officially opens Thursday night, but the Baltimore Orioles have already been actively making roster moves this week. After introducing Craig Albernaz as their new manager, the team revisited a previous deal with the Chicago Cubs, successfully bringing back Andrew Kittredge to strengthen their bullpen.
Continuing to build pitching depth, the Orioles also claimed right-hander George Soriano off waivers from the Miami Marlins. Their activity didn’t end there—on Wednesday night, the club added another depth piece from Miami, further reinforcing their bench options.
Earlier in the week, journalist Mike Rodriguez hinted at the Orioles signing veteran outfielder Leody Taveras, news that was later confirmed by reporter Jon Heyman. The agreement is a one-year contract worth $2 million, adding experience and defensive reliability to Baltimore’s roster.
“It is a one-year deal for $2MM for Taveras to join the Orioles,” reported Jon Heyman.
Taveras made his Major League debut in 2020 and spent most of his career with the Texas Rangers before closing the 2025 season with the Seattle Mariners. His batting stats this year fell short of expectations, with a slash line of .174/.198/.272 over 98 plate appearances. Despite offensive challenges, Taveras has consistently been recognized for his above-average defense and speed on the bases, attributes that should complement the Orioles’ strategic depth next season.
Baltimore strengthens both defense and depth with veteran Leody Taveras and key bullpen additions ahead of the 2026 MLB season.
