Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux from Alberta has announced his resignation from the House of Commons after several days of speculation that he might cross the floor to join the governing Liberals.
The Edmonton Riverbend representative confirmed that he informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday about his plan to leave Parliament, though he did not provide an exact date for his departure.
“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one.”
Jeneroux did not elaborate on the reasons for his sudden decision. He had served as a Conservative MP since first being elected in 2015.
In a letter obtained by the National Post, Jeneroux expressed respect for his colleagues, highlighting his admiration for “the many remarkable individuals on both sides of the aisle” in the House of Commons. His note made only brief mention of party leader Pierre Poilievre.
The resignation follows a turbulent week for the Conservative Party, marking the second departure from caucus within three days and posing a setback for Poilievre less than three months before a planned leadership review in January.
Matt Jeneroux’s resignation, amid rumors of a party switch, deepens internal tension for Conservatives ahead of their upcoming leadership assessment.
