Liberal leader Sussan Ley is facing increasing pressure amid growing speculation that her tenure as leader may be coming to an end. Canberra reporters have been pressing her following controversial remarks from within her own party.
Senator Sarah Henderson, a member of the Liberal Party, openly expressed doubts about the current leadership, stating she “could not support things the way they are” and that Ms. Ley was “losing support” within the party ranks.
“I could not support things the way they are,” said Senator Sarah Henderson.
At a Canberra press conference, Ms. Ley was confronted with questions about whether her “days leading the party were numbered.” She declined to directly address the speculation, choosing instead to focus on criticizing the Albanese government regarding the cost of living.
“I refuse to comment on commentary. We have a very proud team that represents Australian values,” Ms. Ley said.
Ms. Ley did not mention Senator Henderson by name when responding to questions about the criticism. Instead, she emphasized valuing every team member and suggested reporters direct questions about Henderson’s views to the senator herself.
“I value every single member of my team including the good Senator that you’ve just mentioned. In order to interrogate her view, you should probably ask her.”
Despite the internal divisions, Ms. Ley insisted that the team remains focused on resolving the net zero emissions target, even though this issue appears to deepen the split between moderates and conservatives within the party.
The Liberal leader is navigating considerable challenges within her party, balancing public disputes and policy divisions while facing uncertain leadership stability.
