"The Rock" Delivers in "The Smashing Machine"

“The Smashing Machine” has divided audiences worldwide. Some see it as an Oscar-worthy success, while others consider it another misstep for Dwayne Johnson. For me, if this performance doesn’t move you, then Johnson’s work might simply not be your style.

A Complex Portrait

Johnson portrays Mark Kerr, an MMA fighter battling addiction and learning to cope with personal loss. The film mirrors the structure of the documentary “The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr,” even replicating certain original shots to heighten authenticity.

Grounded in Realism

Adding to its realism, the movie includes appearances from professional fighters such as Ryan Bader and Oleksandr Usyk. These choices reinforce the film’s gritty tone and connection to the real fighting world.

Johnson’s Transformative Performance

In previous films, Johnson was often critiqued for playing roles too similar to his own persona. This approach could have weakened the biographical drama’s credibility. Yet here, he completely reshapes his gestures, voice, and physique to inhabit Kerr, delivering one of his most convincing performances to date.

Supporting Talent and Discussion

While Johnson’s performance dominates conversation, there has also been debate about Emily Blunt’s limited screen time and whether her role was underused in the narrative.

“If you don’t enjoy this performance from Johnson, then you will never like his films.”

Author’s summary: Jayden Shipley praises Dwayne Johnson’s intense and transformative portrayal of Mark Kerr, noting the film’s raw realism and divided audience reception.
