Dwayne Johnson's biopic The Smashing Machine chronicles the life of former UFC champion Mark Kerr, a formidable fighter from Ohio whose successes in the cage were often clouded by struggles with addiction and personal turmoil.
Directed by Benny Safdie, known for Uncut Gems, the gritty drama explores Kerr’s journey with emotional depth. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, where critics applauded Johnson’s powerful and raw portrayal.
The actor reportedly spent three to four hours daily in makeup, using over a dozen prosthetics to transform into Kerr.
Despite critical acclaim and hopes for an Oscar nod, The Smashing Machine struggled commercially. Released in theaters on October 3, 2025, the A24 production grossed only $20.2 million worldwide against a $40 million budget, according to Koimoi. By early November, it was largely removed from theaters, leading to an earlier than planned digital release.
The film is now available for streaming, offering audiences a chance to experience Johnson’s transformative role from home.
Mark Kerr’s complex story is vividly brought to life by Dwayne Johnson in a film that, despite commercial challenges, showcases his most emotionally intense performance yet.
