Canada Claims Historic First Win at FIFA U-17 World Cup

Elijah Roche scored in the 88th minute, and Marius Aiyenero converted a stoppage-time penalty as Canada completed a thrilling 2-1 comeback against Uganda on Wednesday. The result marked Canada’s first-ever victory in nine appearances at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Uganda opened the scoring in the 25th minute through James Bogere, celebrating their first goal in their debut FIFA tournament appearance. Canada equalized late when Roche, who had earlier made a crucial defensive tackle, rose to head in Aghilas Sadek’s corner in Doha, Qatar.

Moments later, after video review, Uganda’s John Asiimwe was found guilty of fouling Aiyenero in the penalty area. The substitute, who plays for Los Angeles FC 2, confidently sent goalkeeper Gilbert Mazige the wrong way to secure the 98th-minute winner.

This outcome improved Canada’s record to 1-20-4 in the competition’s history. The team, which last hosted the event in 1987, had previously been outscored 71-13 across 25 matches, including one goal from an Argentine own goal.

“Tonight is a proud moment for our program,” said Canada head coach Mike Vitulano. “We wanted to set a new benchmark for the generations to come and did just that. The boys showed incredible character to come from behind, fight their way back, and find a way to win late. It’s a testament to their belief and togetherness. We’ll enjoy this moment, but our focus quickly shifts to preparing for the next match.”
