Nearly 600 customers in Toronto's Moss Park experienced a power outage starting at 8:11 a.m. on Wednesday, due to an underground cable fault.
“As our crews continue underground repairs, we’ve identified that the cable fault causing this outage appears to be the result of a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site in the area,” Toronto Hydro said in a social media update just before 4:30 p.m.
Toronto Hydro clarified that the incident was unrelated to their own work but caused damage to their infrastructure.
The repair was described as “complex and time-consuming” due to the fault’s location, requiring careful identification, repair, and testing before power could be restored.
“The damage caused by the third-party contractor is extensive, with the dig-ins occurring in multiple spots,” said Toronto Hydro.
Initially, restoration was expected around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, then delayed to 11:30 a.m., and finally confirmed for the afternoon of November 6.
Power was restored to all affected customers at approximately 1 p.m. on Thursday, over 24 hours after the outage began.
Author’s summary: Extensive damage from third-party construction caused a significant power outage in Moss Park, with repairs taking over 24 hours before full restoration.
