'Humiliated' Fire Brigade Boss Loses Discrimination Case Over Use of Term 'Fireman'

Fire Brigade Manager Loses Employment Tribunal Case

Simon Bailey, 58, a manager at the Avon Fire and Rescue Service, lost his employment tribunal claim after being disciplined for not addressing the use of the word “fireman” by his team members in reference to female firefighter Sasha Acheson.

According to tribunal findings, Bailey received a written warning for failing to challenge what was considered outdated and potentially discriminatory language at the workplace. The incident stemmed from a conversation in which a crew member used the term “fireman” while referring to Acheson, a professional firefighter and former international rugby player.

Bailey argued that he felt unfairly treated and claimed he had been “humiliated” by the disciplinary action. He later brought a case against the fire service, alleging discrimination and detriment. However, the tribunal dismissed his claims, ruling that the organization had acted within reason to uphold its standards on inclusion and appropriate terminology.

Tribunal’s View on Inclusive Language

The tribunal emphasized that modern standards in the fire service encourage gender‑neutral professional terms such as “firefighter.” The panel determined that enforcing these language guidelines promotes equality in a historically male‑dominated field.

A statement from the panel noted that while Bailey may have felt personally embarrassed by the warning, the measure was consistent with the service’s equality and diversity policy.

Reaction and Aftermath

Following the ruling, the Avon Fire and Rescue Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive work environment. A spokesperson said that the service “expects all staff to use inclusive language that reflects the diversity of its workforce.”

Bailey, who continues to work within the service, has not publicly commented following the decision.

“The use of inclusive terminology reflects a commitment to fairness and respect across the organisation,” the tribunal stated.
