EFJ President shows support for Italian journalists on strike

EFJ President expresses solidarity with Italian journalists on strike

The President of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), Maja Sever, expressed strong support for Italian journalists who are currently on strike. Acting on behalf of the more than 300,000 journalists represented by the EFJ across 44 European countries, Sever emphasized the importance of protecting journalists’ rights, fair working conditions, and media freedom across Europe.

“The EFJ stands firmly beside our Italian colleagues at this difficult time. Journalism is a cornerstone of democracy, and its workers deserve respect and fair treatment,” said Maja Sever.

The strike, organized by Italian professional journalists’ unions, highlights growing concern over precarious employment, shrinking media independence, and deteriorating pay conditions. The EFJ urged national authorities and media companies to engage in constructive dialogue with journalists’ representatives and to ensure that collective bargaining agreements are upheld.

Sever reiterated that journalists’ struggles in Italy reflect broader European challenges, such as political pressure on the press, job insecurity, and the commercial erosion of ethical journalism. She called for European solidarity to defend public-interest reporting and safeguard the social rights of media professionals.

“When journalists cannot work freely or with dignity, democracy itself is at risk,” Sever noted, stressing the EFJ’s ongoing commitment to amplify the voices of journalists fighting for better conditions.
