The high school cross country season reached the finish line on Nov. 14-15 in Aiken on the Aiken Steeplechase course. The Berkeley County School District’s performances were highlighted by Philip Simmons’ boys and girls squads, who swept the Class 2A championships for the second straight season. Senior Avah Mallek raced to a first-place finish for the Philip Simmons girls in a time of 18 minutes, 37.64 seconds, while sophomore Laura Perry and junior Flynn Taylor placed fourth and 10th for the Iron Horses, who also counted 12th- and 15th-place finishes from senior Keziah Varner and seventh-grader Stella Wininger.
Philip Simmons compiled 39 points, edging runner-up Landrum by seven points. The Iron Horses’ boys accumulated 37 points, defeating runner-up Academic Magnet by 17 points. The Philip Simmons boys placed five runners inside the top 12, paced by sophomore Matthew Perry in fourth place. Senior Trent Manning was fifth. The Iron Horses also counted finishes from sophomore Grady Castiglia, senior Brian Stambaugh and sophomore Griffin Tollison in seventh, ninth and 12th place.
Timberland’s boys finished 14th in Class 2A, led by sophomore Jacob Haynes in 66th place. In Class 3A, Hanahan’s girls placed fourth as a team with 122 points. The Hawks finished behind Greer Middle College, Christ Church and St. Freshman Colby DeLamielleure guided Hanahan in sixth place.
