Sony Embraces Cloud Gaming on PlayStation Portal
While Google’s Stadia has faded into the past, cloud gaming continues to develop, and Sony is now advancing this field with an update to its PlayStation Portal handheld. The device finally enables players to use cloud gaming features directly on the unit.
New Cloud Gaming Access
The PlayStation Portal, similar in concept to the Steam Deck, has previously relied on a PlayStation 5 console to stream games. With the latest update, this limitation changes—users can now play select digital PlayStation 5 titles from their own libraries via cloud gaming, even without connecting to a PS5 through Remote Play.
“Starting today, all PlayStation Portal owners will be able to use cloud gaming on the handheld.”
Expanded Catalog and Features
The update includes a catalog of PlayStation games available through PlayStation Plus cloud streaming. A new “Cloud Streaming” home screen and search option help players easily access games they own or those included in their subscription.

Subscription Requirement
To take advantage of these cloud gaming functions, users need an $18 per month PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. This fee grants access to Sony’s streaming library and remote gaming features.
