NEW BRITAIN — More than a dozen people recently enjoyed a lively morning of pickleball at the New Britain CCARC event. The gathering took place at Club Pickleball inside Meriden Mall, welcoming attendees of all ages with special needs.
The club provided the courts and equipment for the occasion. The Center for Community Resources, based on Slater Road, focuses on supporting individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities across various ages and genders. This nonprofit is nearing its 80th year of service to the community.
Anthony Gionfriddo, director of the Beautiful Lives Project, coordinated the event. Participants eagerly took to the courts, visibly excited to play the sport that has gained popularity nationwide in recent years.
“What a fantastic morning as these folks have a chance to be part of this sport, and you can see the energy they all have and can’t wait to get on the courts. This is their time to shine, look at those smiles,” said Gionfriddo.
Adding a special touch to the event, Gionfriddo surprised attendees by inviting Joseph R. Gannascoli, known as Vito from The Sopranos, to serve as a guest instructor. Gannascoli shared his knowledge on the court and later participated in a meet-and-greet with photo opportunities and autograph signings.
The event showcased the joy and enthusiasm of participants, emphasizing community inclusion through sport.
